Mr. Rogers Wore Sneakers in Pittsburgh

I’ve been thinking about Pittsburgh for the last 4 days – since the terrible tragedy occurred when 11 innocent Jewish souls were killed by a sick animal. My son, Alex and I spent 4 wonderful days in Pittsburgh in August of this year. Pittsburgh is a great city. A vibrant town with so many special and caring people, so much culture…it’s such an amazing sports town. Pittsburgh is a big city with a small town feel.

These days, I have been thinking about the late Fred Rogers and his legendary PBS TV show, “Mr Rogers” that was produced in Pittsburgh for many years.  Fred Rogers is a hero of mine. What would Mr. Rogers say about what happened in his beloved city of Pittsburgh? His wisdom is missed more than ever in the difficult period that we now live in. We need more stand up people like Mr. Rogers in our lives to tell our children that it’s all going to work out. That peace and love and civility is in our world and it’s out there – we live in a world with the vast, vast majority being decent, warm, loving and peaceful men and women and that we live in the greatest country in the world. That evil can not break us. That love can and will overcome hate. And compassion and care and love for one another makes us stronger.

Mr. Rogers wore sneakers on his TV show – just like the thousands of kids who have worn sneakers while playing basketball with us over the years with the Greenwich Stars Basketball Organization. The attached photo is of the actual “sneakers” that Mr. Rogers wore on his TV show (these iconic sneakers are displayed in the Heinz Museum of History, Pittsburgh, PA).

I treasure the wisdom of Mr. Rogers, especially his important quote about helping kids — “Anyone who does anything to help a child in his life is a hero to me.” ― Fred Rogers

The Greenwich Stars are more than just a huge basketball organization. Basketball is what we do – but it’s not who we are.  Basketball does not define us. Join the Greenwich Stars family.  Our basketball players and families come from 38 towns in New York and Connecticut. Let us help you navigate you and your child’s life – thru our mentoring program, our special needs program, our scholarship program, and on our basketball teams, leagues and clinics. The Greenwich Stars are family – we’re here for you. 12 months a year. Every day. Always.
